How to keep a healthy kidney

Most of us know the kidney to be a very important organ in the body that is responsible for the removal of waste products and excess fluid but we don’t know some of our habits that can destroy it.

The kidney performs other functions such as balancing of the body’s fluid, controls the production of red blood cells, produce the hormone that helps in the regulation of blood pressure, remove waste products from the body, etc. the kidney also contain millions of functioning units called nephrons which also has tiny blood vessels called glomerulus attached to a tubule. This is where most of the kidney’s functions are carried out.

Kidney disorders are silent killers. They will largely affect the quality of your life if not managed from an early stage. There are several ways how you can keep your kidneys healthy, and here are some of them.

1. Stay active and fit:

Staying fit helps you reduce the risk of Chronic Kidney Diseases by regulating your blood pressure levels. Limit salt intake, sugar consumption and drink enough water to stay fit and healthy.

2. Keep control of your blood sugar levels:

People who are suffering from diabetes stand at a higher risk of kidney disorders. If you have diabetes, it’s important to go for regular checkups and get your kidney health checked.

Kidney damage due to diabetes can be managed or reduced when detected early. Keep control of your blood sugar levels with a proper balance of diet and regular exercise.

3. Check your blood pressure:

Uncontrolled blood pressure is one of the common causes of kidney damage. High blood pressure is commonly associated with high cholesterol, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. If not controlled at an early stage, it can even lead to chronic kidney diseases.

4. Keep your weight in check and eat healthy:

Eating healthy and keeping your weight in check can help lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other illnesses associated with Chronic Kidney Diseases.

5. Limit your salt intake:

The recommended salt intake is approximately a teaspoon a day. To reduce your sodium intake, try to limit your consumption of restaurant foods and packaged foods. Add homemade meals to your diet. Also, do not add extra salt to your food as it can raise your sodium levels. You can easily control your salt intake if you cook food with fresh ingredients at home.

6. Do not smoke:

Excessive smoking slows down the blood flow to your kidneys. This impairs their ability to work properly when less blood reaches the kidneys. Also, smoking increases the risk of kidney cancer to a significant extent.

7.  Avoid over-the-counter pills on a daily basis

Common anti-inflammatory, non-steroidal drugs are known to cause kidney damage if taken regularly. Avoid them whenever possible.

The kidney can be affected and when not treated on time can lead to death. Some chronic kidney disease includes glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, congenital diseases, etc.
